Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium: mission is to inspire wonder, curiosity, and responsibility for the natural world.
The Fairbanks Museum was founded in 1889 by St. Johnsbury industrialist Franklin Fairbanks. Inside our classic Victorian building, you’ll find a dazzling array of animals and artifacts, gems and meteorites, shells and fossils, and much more! Take a trip through the cosmos in Vermont’s only public planetarium. A full calendar of events, workshops, lectures and field programs invites everyone to explore the nature of our world.

When Franklin Fairbanks opened the doors to this Museum in St. Johnsbury, Vermont over a century ago, he invited all of New England to see beyond the horizon by bringing exquisite examples of natural science and beautiful artifacts from around the world to his home town. His “cabinet of curiosities” grew to include our National Historic Register building, a triumph of Victorian architecture, the cornerstone of St. Johnsbury’s Victorian Main Street. Inside, our collections include:
  • natural science specimens (mounted birds, mammals, reptiles and fish; insects; nests and eggs; shells; fossils; rocks and minerals; herbarium)
  • Fairbanks Family legacy (items reflecting the travels and business interests of Franklin and Frances Fairbanks; archival photographs and documents)
  • ethnological items collected from Oceania, the Near East, Africa, Egypt, Japan and native North America during the Victorian era
  • Diderot’s Encyclopedia
Lyman Spitzer Jr. Planetarium: Immerse Yourself - The only public planetarium in Vermont invites you to take a tour of the cosmos, get transported by extreme weather, or travel through time to the age of the dinosaurs. Choose from a selection of films and in-person presentations during your visit. Or reserve the planetarium for a private show!
Hours and FeesOpen daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
We suggest allowing about 2 hours to tour our galleries.

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum:
Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes opened its doors as a non-profit museum in 1986. Beginning in an original historic stone schoolhouse, its waterfront campus has grown to over a dozen buildings serving upwards of 3,500 students each year through nautical exploration, pedagogy and experiential learning adventures. We inspire students to ‘Learn from the Lake’ and make valuable connections between the discoveries made through underwater research and historical exploration, the future of their communities and the world around them.

Rokeby Museum:
Rokeby Museum presents a nationally significant Underground Railroad story tucked inside a quintessential Vermont experience. A major exhibit — Free & Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont — brings the Underground Railroad vividly to life. Focused on Simon and Jesse, two fugitives from slavery who found shelter here in the 1830s, the exhibit traces their stories from slavery to freedom, introduces the abolitionist Robinson family who called Rokeby home, and    explores the turbulent decades leading up to the Civil War. The historic house — fully furnished with 200 years of                                                                        domestic belongings — provides an intimate glimpse into the family’s life through four generations. Once a thriving                                                                    Merino sheep farm, Rokeby retains nine historic farm buildings filled with agricultural artifacts. Acres of pastoral                                                                        landscape dotted with old wells, stone walls, and historic orchards invite a leisurely stroll or a hike up the trail. Picnic                                                                tables accommodate lunch outdoors.

From 1793 to 1961, Rokeby was home to four generations of Robinsons — a remarkable family of Quakers, farmers,                                                                      abolitionists, artists, and authors. Today, the Robinson family’s home is a National Historic Landmark, designated for its                                                            exceptional Underground Railroad history. Rokeby is among the best-documented Underground Railroad sites in the                                                                county, one the National Park Service has described as “unrivaled among known sites for its historical integrity and                                                                the poignancy of the stories it tells.”

The Museum’s exhibits nine historic farm outbuildings, and trails.
