 Bloom
Author: Kenneth Oppel
Grade level : 5 - 6
Lexile measure : 670L
Hardcover : 320 pages
Publisher : Knopf Books for Young Readers; Illustrated edition (March 10, 2020)
Reading level : 10 - 12 years

If you are looking for an action packed thrill ride of a story that you won’t want to put down, then Bloom, by Kenneth Oppel  is the book for you.  Imagine living a perfectly normal life on a perfectly normal island off the coast of Western Canada. You go to school, hang out with your friends and do normal kid stuff. But one day after a rain storm, odd black plants start shooting up all over the island. Only a few a first, but in what seems like a blink of an eye, they are everywhere! The vines wind, curl and take over houses and destroy anything in their path. Additionally they appear to spew poisonous pollen that has debilitating effects on humans. Three teens, Anya, Petra and Seth are the only residents of the island that seem immune from the plants wrath. As they are drawn together, they must try to solve the mystery of the plants origin while attempting to save their island. Bloom is the first book in the Overthrow Trilogy and after finishing the last page, you’ll be counting down the days until the next installment is published.
