Brief History of The Black River Academy (1835–1938) - chartered in 1835 and received students from 26 states and 3 foreign countries throughout its 103 years of educating young men and women. The original building burned and for 44 years classes were held in the old Union Church , which was taken down and the present academy erected on the identical site in 1888-l889. The last class to graduate the old Academy was that of 1938. In 1948 the building was leased for a convalescent home. From 1968 to 1972 the building was idle waiting for revival. Following the formation of the Black River Historical Society, the Black River Academy Trustees were favorable to selling for one dollar the building and grounds to that society. The Academy building was restored and transformed into museum to house the cultural heritage of the Black River Valley area
- Origins: Chartered in 1835, the Academy originally served as a private school for the region's youth. [1, 2]
- Famous Alumni: It educated notable historical figures, most famously the 30th U.S. President, Calvin Coolidge, as well as Rotary International founder Paul Harris. [1]
- Transition: The historic 1888 Richardsonian Romanesque building, located on High Street, eventually served as the town high school until 1938. [1]
Brief History of Black River High School (1939 - 2020)- had deep roots in the community, tracing its lineage back to the renowned Black River Academy (chartered in 1835). Following years of declining enrollment and district consolidation, the public middle/high school closed in June 2020, though the legacy and building live on.

- New Facility: In 1939, a new three-story brick building opened to accommodate growing student bodies (initially 454 students). [1]
- Community Heart: BRHS was highly competitive athletically and artistically, anchoring the greater Ludlow area by drawing large, enthusiastic crowds to its events for generations. [1, 2]
- Closure: Following Vermont's Act 46 public school consolidation efforts, Ludlow unified its school district with neighboring Mount Holly. This ultimately led to the controversial and heartbreaking closure of Black River High School in June 2020. [1, 2]

Okemo Valley TV is a community access TV station and media center serving the Black River Valley & Okemo region in Southern Vermont. Our service area specifically includes the small Towns of Ludlow, Mount Holly, Plymouth, Cavendish, Andover, & Reading, although we serve much of the wider region around these Towns. We are here to serve individual community members, non profit organizations & community groups, as well as schools, local, State, & federal government with free & low-cost media services. We offer equipment, training, and support for those wishing to produce and/or provide programming for us to telecast & stream online.
